Last night I hit the gym for an hour to do full-body weights. I've been reading quite a bit about using your whole body, or at least different muscle groups, when working out, so I tested it out yesterday. For example: I did squats on stability thingies (they look like mushroom caps? If you've ever done physical therapy or sports-related training, you know what I'm talking about), like I normally do, but I also did shoulder presses, curls, and rows while I did the squats. Loved it!
I went to the pool and did 32 laps after the gym; I'm getting better at it, slowly! I think a mile is 76 laps, so I'd like to build up to that for cross-training purposes (and maybe a future triathlon sprint?)
Got up and did 4 miles this morning, over the Naval Academy bridge. I say "did," intentionally, because "run" would be misleading..."hobble" is more accurate. It should have been a great run, especially since I pampered my shins with swimming yesterday (have I mentioned yet how much I STILL hate one-piece bathingsuits?), but it wasn't. Breathing was great, thighs were cooperating with the bridge climb, but the shins? Oh noooooo, they just had to decide that today was not their day. I hobbled and cried through close to 3 of the 4 miles, and could barely stand up when I finally got home. I see my PCP tomorrow, so I'm going to ask for a referral to an orthopedic doctor or sports-oriented physical therapist. I'm also pulling out my old orthotics to see if they help. At this rate, I will be walking the marathon, not running it--and that is not acceptable.

In Memory of Jennifer Mahan
I'm dedicating my training this week to the memory of Jennifer Mahan, the mother of a dear friend of mine, who died from Leukemia. I'm also going to wear Jennifer's name when I run in the marathon in June.
I did my kickboxing class last night, then did 3.3 miles on the treadmill. Shin splints are still bothering me, so I think I'm going to try topical Ibuprofen in addition to everything else I do.
Tonight I plan to do upper and lower body weights and 45-60 min. cardio, either at the gym, or swimming laps at the pool. My swimming partner is out of town this week, so I'd have to brave the pool alone, so we'll see!

Reminder
This article is a powerful reminder of why the members of Team in Training run, walk, bike, swim and hike to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society:

After work I have my kickboxing class, then I'll be doing speed training intervals on the treadmill (can't wait for daylight savings so I can run outside!). It's beautiful and sunny in Annapolis, but also very cold and windy, so the treadmill and I will have to be friends today.
Cheers!

Week Summary!
So last week I put in 11.5 miles--not shabby! I had a rough run on Thursday night; I was supposed to run 3 miles, but was fighting with uncooperative shin splints, so kept it to a sloooow 2 miles. I ran a nice 4 miles on Tuesday, though, so I wasn't too upset. Saturday I did 5.5mi. with TNT--including a BIG hill (I love Coach Nancy!). 'Twasn't my best run, but I never claimed to be a good runner!
I didn't do so well on the cross-training last week. =/ I was unreasonably tired all week, which took a toll on my training (getting up at 5am is that much less appealing when you didn't go to bed until 12am!). I stayed in all weekend, with the exception of my TNT run Saturday, and pilates and brunch on Sunday. I got quite a bit done, but still didn't get much extra sleep, and still have a To-Do list a mile long!
I was late getting out of the house this morning, so did a short version of my squat/leg weights routine and 25 minutes on the Arc-Trainer (best hill training and butt-kicker!). Tomorrow is a run day, and I'm up for another 3 mile day on Tuesday and a 4 mile day on Thursday, but I'd like to put in a little more this week (shins willing!), maybe 4 and 4 or 4 and 5.
If you haven't visited my Fundraising page yet, please do, and support me and LLS!

Brianna is running a marathon!
Hey everyone!
Welcome to my training log. I'm running three endurance events this summer:
May 3, 2009 - Frederick Half Marathon
May 30, 2009 - Zooma Half Marathon
June 27, 2009 - Seattle Rock N' Roll Marathon
The first two (half marathons) are just events that I'm running on my own, but I'm running the Seattle Rock N' Roll marathon with Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. I've committed to raise at least $4,500 to help support the LLS while I run this event. Check out my Fundraising page here to see what Team in Training and LLS are all about, or to donate!

These are the first endurance events I've ever trained for, so I'm excited and scared! I'll be keeping my training log here, and update it so you can see my progress and cheer me on. I'll post pictures and any ridiculous stories that come up as I train.
Peace!
